The leading ladies of “Laverne & Shirley” are reuniting.
Nickelodeon said Wednesday that Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams will guest star in an episode of its new sitcom “Sam & Cat.”
The actresses starred as 1950s and ’60s pals and roommates Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney, workers in a Milwaukee brewery. The sitcom aired from 1976 to 1983 on ABC.
“Sam & Cat” features Jennette McCurdy and Ariana Grande as friends who start a baby-sitting business.
Nickelodeon says Marshall and Williams will start filming on Wednesday. They play characters involved in a decades-old feud, tweaking the long-ago rumors of a “Laverne & Shirley” rivalry.
“Sam & Cat” creator Dan Schneider says it was an honor to write for what he called TV’s” funniest female roommates” ever.

The 19-year-old sped closer to stardom last week, as her catchy Mariah Careyesque single The Way, which features Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller, went platinum, with more than a million copies sold.
Grande has already made appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Late Night with Jimmy Fallo n, even singing Payphone alongside Maroon 5’s Adam Levine.
“Since I performed it [ The Way] live on Ellen, the nicest thing people are saying is that they’re excited I’m a real singer, that I don’t fake my singing,” Grande said.
The song bears a strong resemblance to R&B diva Carey, as Grande’s poppy vocals pair nicely with Miller’s raps, giving the song a ’90s R&B crossover vibe. Carey embraced that role throughout her career.
Grande even did a cover of Carey’s 1991 hit single Emotions last year, paying tribute to a “queen,” in her words. She said the comparisons are “the biggest compliment in the world,” but she wants to be her own artist.
“I try to just sing how I sing,” Grande said. “As a new female artist who is viewed in the industry, you always have to be compared to somebody. . . . It comes with the territory.”
Grande’s new Nickelodeon television show, Sam & Cat, has a similar take on the past. Grande reprises her role as Cat Valentine from Victorious, while iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy continues as Sam Puckett.
In the series, which premiered June 8, the two girls live together as roommates. But their day jobs as babysitters provide for plenty of unique situations that play out like a modern-day Laverne & Shirley.
Despite the newfound success, Grande remains humbled.
“I’m really proud. I don’t like to speak too heavy about my own work,” she said.
Still, history will be an important element of Grande’s new album, which she describes as “cool, soulful, groovy, feel good” music. Due out in early August, the yet-to-be-named album will also have some ’60s moments and ’50s style duets, according to Grande.
“It’s surreal,” she said. “I’m very, very excited.”
And do not think Grande has forgotten her South Florida ties. She recorded a Spanglish version of The Way, despite considering herself only 70 percent fluent. Grande said it was something she “always” wanted to do.
The album was about three years in the making. Grande calls the music side of her life a “passion.” She even sang the National Anthem before a Florida Panthers game at age 8.
“I think I’ve finally found what I’ve meant to be doing,” Grande said. “I hope my Florida fans will be proud of me.”
Oh, and she also has a summer tour in the works, with one particular stop in mind.
“[I’m] definitely making it to Florida,” she said."

Yes, I lost a bit of weight last year. It’s because I stopped eating junk food and started making healthy choices. I was happy with the way I was before and I’m still happy now! Just healthier! To be honest I never really looked at myself too long in the mirror when I was younger, I just didn’t care. (Which is why some of my red carpet photos are so mortifying). But the lifestyle change I chose to make last August is not and was never about being skinnier. I just wasn’t taking care of myself at all. I was making really poor choices. This is about making sure the foods you put in your body will nourish you and be put to good use. The reason why I lost as much weight as I did is because I used to live on junk food. Like around the clock. So I drastically changed my eating habits, started exercising daily and I’m all around a healthier me. I’m eating as much as I was before just the content has changed. And the way I’m eating now actually helped even out my blood sugar. As some of you guys may know I’ve struggled with awful hypoglycemia for my whole life and it’s improved a ton since I changed my eating habits. Also, I’ve been coming up with these really fun, healthy, completely organic homemade snack recipes after work. I’ll share some of them on Tumblr soon.
Also, I saw some of you talking about the red string I wear… I don’t like to usually be very public about things like religion or whatnot because I feel like as an entertainer some things in life should be kept a little more personal but since I have this intimate relationship with you guys I’m always willing to answer any questions for you. I’ve always been a little bit of everything when it comes to religion. I was born Roman Catholic and I still go to church sometimes and of course celebrate Christmas and Easter and go get my ashes on Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday. I grew up in Boca so I celebrated Jewish holidays with all of my closest friends and know a bit of Hebrew. I even sang a portion of the Torah at Aaron’s bar mitzvah with Sam. Nobody knows this but I also meditate every day and do spiritual energy work. So I’m kind of all over the place as far as religion / spirituality, but I like it all. But when I was 12 years old I used to practice Kabbalah at the Kabbalah center in Boca and of course I wore “The Red String”. I decided to pick it back up a couple of months ago because I really loved doing it but I never really said anything publicly about it because I didn’t really feel the need to. As an entertainer I’m always kinda scared when it comes to talking about religion or politics because I just feel like it’s not my place. Lemme sing for ya and go home, you know? Keep the peace. Not everything needs to be shared. As much as I love you guys and you are dear friends to me and do know me very well… I still do have a personal life you know?
So The Red String I wear is alignment and a form of protection from negativity. It’s also a bit of a reminder to keep your actions and thoughts and words kind and positive and helpful to stay in contact with the light which brings me to the sun tattoo. I was going to get a little sun on my finger to remind me to keep in contact with ‘the light’. :)
So I’m sure a lot of you didn’t want to or need to hear any of this but I felt like the rumors were getting a bit too out of control. I can’t thank you enough for being concerned about me I really cant. It’s very kind and I love and adore and appreciate you all so much. But any time you have any questions for me you know I’m always here to answer. Please don’t draw your own conclusions or drive yourselves crazy because at the end of the day I’m really the only one who knows these answers anyway hehe.

The series premiered June 8 at 8 p.m., averaging 4.2 million total viewers, up 76 percent over last year. In the all-important — for Nickelodeon — 2-11 demo, the “Sam & Cat” premiere posted a 6.2 rating, a 103 percent improvement over last year.
The new series stars former “iCarly” star Jennette McCurdy and “Victorious” vet Ariana Grande, reprising their roles from their respective series. In the spinoff, the pair become best friends and roommates who start a babysitting service. “Sam & Cat” was created by Dan Schneider, who executive produced “iCarly,” “Victorious” and fellow Nickelodeon series “Drake & Josh” and “Zoey 101.”"

Despite strong counter-programming directly against us, the debut of Sam & Cat broke the 4 million barrier… with 4.2 million total viewers!
It was Nickelodeon biggest live-action launch in the past THREE YEARS.
And it was Nickelodeon’s biggest live-action launch in TEN YEARS, if you don’t count launches that followed the Kids’ Choice Awards or an iCarly TV special.
In other words, Sam & Cat’s ratings come without the help of a powerful lead-in!!!
Sam & Cat swept kid, tween and teen demos as number-one on Saturday, June 8th, among Kids 2-11, Kids 6-11, Tweens 9-14, and Teens 12-17. Among its target audience, the show raised last year’s levels by triple digits and handily beat direct competition by high double digits.
By Sunday morning, Sam & Cat hit the #1 spot on all of iTunes! That’s not just for Kids TV… but for all TV shows on iTunes…
